Champions: New Zealand Winners

43 subjects, 12,000 kms, from Kaikohe to Bluff in 101 days

From 21st December 2007 – 31st March 2008 Jessie, her husband Matt and two year old son Dylan spent 101 days touring the country pulling a 1970’s caravan searching for champions and winners from all walks of life.

Award-winning jam-makers. Rodeo cowboys. ‘Universe’-straddling drag queens. These seemingly disparate individuals, along with forty more from the length and breadth of the country, are brought together in a loving tribute to the unsung New Zealand achiever, Champions: New Zealand Winners.

Although rarely publicised outside of their hometowns, each winner in the book is a testament to the passion and determination of the people of Aotearoa. The portraits are the fruit of Casson’s desire to capture the dedication, self-belief and good old Kiwi ‘can-do’ attitude that make New Zealanders who they are.

Champions: New Zealand WinnersThe book showcases Casson’s honest yet dynamic style of portrait, giving a reflective insight into the lives and personality of her subjects. A double page is given to each subject and accompanying each portrait is a short interview with the subject, plus information regarding the competition or sport the subject champions. The book is published by Random House and is on sale throughout NZ for $29.95. The book can be ordered online from fishpond.co.nz
